Ultrasound evaluates the structure of the breast tissue and the location of the tumor to help the surgeon create a personalized surgical plan for each patient. In breast cancer patients who respond well to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, tumors may be difficult to identify preoperatively. The study found that ultrasound-guided breast surgery significantly increased the likelihood of tumor-free margins, thereby reducing the risk of reoperation. The study also recommended that “ultrasound equipment should be used in every breast surgery operating room.”
